A new study was recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). This study looked at the use of intravenous calcium EDTA (high affinity for lead) and DMSA (high affinity for mercury) chelation in patients with a recent cardiovascular event due to chronic heavy metal burden. According to Dr Roy Heilbron MD, one of the studies investigators, these heavy metals cause damage to the endothelial lining of blood vessels and impairs nitric oxide synthesis which leads to plaque formation and sets the stage for cardiac events. An interesting note is that patients with erectile dysfunction (often one of the first signs of cardiovascular impairment) who underwent this therapy found a reversal of their condition. This is likely due to improved nitric oxide synthesis by the endothelial cells, which enhances blood flow to tissues.
Other recommendations made by Dr. Heilbron in a webinar he presented to physicians include the use of far infra-red sauna (sweat glands are like little kidneys), high dose vitamin C therapy, and coffee enemas (to boost glutathione levels in the liver). He recommended that patients with sulphur or caffeine sensitivities use sauna therapy, which will be effective but takes much longer than IV chelation.
Here is a summary of the study results:
Overall, it appears that chelation therapy is completely safe and effective in the prevention of cardiac events. There is an increasing prevalence of chronic toxic chemical exposures, such as lead and mercury, and a link to significant negative health outcomes.
This is an exciting and innovative therapy that I will be offering in my clinic! The American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM) is one of the leaders in physician training for detoxification and IV chelation, which is where I will be taking my training.
If you would like to learn more about Dr Heilbron’s work with IV chelation therapy, the documentary Unleaded looks at how heavy metals cause disease, and what chelation therapy can do towards possibly reversing heart disease, diabetes, and many other diseases by removing heavy metals and toxins from our bodies.
